SOLUTION TO LAST MONTH'S QUIZ

  1). Motions A and B were carried. C was defeated.

  2). 7 candidates passed both exams.

  3). 2 people spoke all three languages.

Notes 1). Only the first and third journalists were consistent, so the second was the one who reported incorrectly.
2). The numbers may be inserted
in the Venn diagram by
trial and error.
   3). The number who spoke all three languages
         may be found by trial and error:
            If 2 speak all three languages, then
               5 must speak English and French only,
               4 must speak English and German only,
           and 3 must speak French and German only.
        Also, 16 speak only their own language.
      Total = 30 as required.
